At the Teso Elites Development Association (TEDA), sustainability is not just a checkbox or a short-term goal—it is our ongoing, core commitment.
When addressing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) challenges across communities in the Teso and Bukedi sub-regions, the standard approach has long focused heavily on building hardware. While installing handwashing stations and pit latrines is essential, history has proven that infrastructure alone is not enough. Lasting change goes far beyond providing facilities.
To turn this vision into reality, TEDA recently hosted an intensive, interactive WASH Capacity-Building Workshop. The objective was clear: equip our people with the vital knowledge, practical skills, and confidence needed to own, manage, and sustain health solutions directly within their own communities.
Strategic Takeaways from the Training
The training focused on transforming participants from passive beneficiaries into active leaders, anchoring discussions around four critical pillars:
Hygiene Promotion
Participants engaged in practical exercises to make good hygiene practices an integrated, non-negotiable part of everyday life.
Sustainable Sanitation Management
The session focused on the localized maintenance of robust, adaptable sanitation solutions that communities can manage independently over time.
Capacity Building
We actively upskilled community members, school representatives, and local leaders, giving them the administrative tools needed to handle upkeep and resource management.
Nurturing Local Champions
True longevity relies on local leadership. The workshop served to empower internal advocates to take complete ownership of future health and sanitation initiatives.
Shifting from Systems to Citizens
We are not simply building infrastructure; we are building the capabilities of the people who interact with it every day. When community leaders understand the mechanics of management and school structures adopt permanent behavioral hygiene shifts, the entire ecosystem becomes resilient.
By prioritizing human capital and interactive training over physical installations alone, we pave the way for self-reliant communities capable of breaking the cycle of preventable illnesses.
